Do you have a TV (or similar tech) in your kitchen?

We were sitting in the outdoor kitchen having a glass of wine last night when I said without much thought it might be nice to get a portable tv, bring it out occasionally for watching the rugby, you know the sort of thing sit down, relax, have a beer enjoy the view and the game.

I had a TV in my kitchen for about 6 months when the children were babies and promptly got rid of it because I have a no tech at the table rule for obvious reasons.

But the children are now grown and have their own place, when they come home they want to chat and make merry so I’m not concerned that having a TV would stymie conversation or development. In fact I think it might be nice to have a bit of something on in the background while I stir pots on long cooks.

I’m not sure though. I do value peace and quiet too.

Do you have a TV in your kitchen? If you do how do you use it? If you don’t is there a reason why not?

Nope, nor can I see the TV from the kitchen. I could turn it on to play music, though, but I don’t want any distractions when I’m cooking, or else when I present you with the lovely big helping of spaghetti and meatballs I promised, it would be missing either the spaghetti or the meatballs…or both.

I do use my phone for occasional recipes, but that’s it. There is a tiny TV above the bar, way the other side of the room. I could just barely see that…if it were hooked up.

Distractions are dangerous with knives and hot things. 😱

When I do the dog grooming which can be quite boring I usually have something on that I’m familiar with so I don’t feel compelled to look. I enjoy that, but I have tried having stuff playing on my ipad whilst cooking and mostly I completely ignore it and after a while the noise starts to annoy me!

I think outside with a bbq, a beer and a game I might enjoy it.
I’m looking at TV’s right now trying to find a suitable bargain and then I’ll try and decide if I think it’s worth it.

I think an outside kitchen is an entirely different thing than an inside kitchen. It makes a lot more sense, because “outside kitchen” to me says, “outside entertaining area that happens to have a TV.”

However, if I had an outside kitchen (and I can think of 3,911 things I’d rather have), after the first round of entertaining occurred, I’d have a new rule…”If I’m outside cookin’, everyone else better be inside lookin’!” - I simply cannot cook or tend bar or anything involving any kind of prep/cooking with people about.

I remember that from another discussion somewhere on here 🤔
I think I said on that thread I don’t mind so long as they don’t get in my way or try to help too much. Generally when people come in the kitchen I say “Have a seat” and motion to the table so they can talk but don’t get under my feet.

I don’t want the tv for ‘entertaining’ purposes, I’m thinking get something light (under 10kg) and hang it out there for Mr SSOAP and I to enjoy the sunshine together but also not together if you know what I mean. Haha that’s plain as mud isn’t it 😂

I can see my TV from the kitchen but it's only on for maybe 5, at most, hours of the day in the evening.
Same, if the kitchen door is open I can take one step back from the counter to see my tv screen, but I generally only turn it on in the evening.
If there is something of interest on tv I can 'part watch' it, ie listen in while focusing on food with occasional glimpses to keep track or when something more notable is on screen.
My recipes are on my laptop, which is in my main room, close to the kitchen door.

I have a "tablet-on-the-shelf" in the kitchen. I can access my shopping list, recipes, any videos/demo/etc from the web (if needed....)
it is most useful for the shopping list - cooking along and you notice something is in short supply, having it 'right there' means I won't forget it while walking the 20 feet or so to the office computer . . . to put it on the list . . .

Nope, and I can’t see the TV from the kitchen either.

Generally, we only have the TV on if someone is actually watching it (or playing video games on it).

I do have a bluetooth speaker in my kitchen - I often listen to podcasts while I cook, either on there or my phone. I also listen to podcasts a lot while I knit or cross-stitch.

Our home is of the "open concept" so the living/dining/kitchen are as one large area of the house.
I do have a big screen smart TV in the living area, but it's rarely on - we only stream, no cable/satellite/cellular hot spot/aerial antenna connection television for years now.
I do have my laptop and DH's iPad in the dining area - my desk/home office is between the two, which is really just my girlie-girlie desk setup. I do now allow DH's device at the table during a meal ONLY if the baseball game is on and we both watch it. Other wise, it's conversation about the day or up coming events in our lives.
