I’m surprised about that. Those type of doughnuts seem to have got about a bit 😂
What about English/British doughnuts?

Love them , when I lived there I devoured a pack or two every week ( worked full time as a cleaner so burned right through them) , especially lemon curd filled ones.

But nothing like that in NL. I miss krispy kreme!

That’s one of the things I love about an international forum, learning tidbits like that, because that’s the standard doughnut here and you can find them everywhere, from Mom & Pop gas stations to convenience stores, markets, big grocery chains, and bakeries of course - if they’re selling doughnuts, it’ll include those.

They’re the ones that we always see boxes of being brought into work on American tv shows.

Yes I know, I am jealous!

Only donuts I can find near my house are those rolled in sugar or glazed with chocolate or very fake strawberry and sprinkles. Never just a simple glaze doughnut

I shall oblige..

Done!
Do you know where doughnuts originated? ( Nooooo, it was not the New York police department)
As far as I know the Americans got them from either the Dutch or Germans, but I suppose these culinary myths always lead to a lot of discussion

For anyone who’s tasted the horrors of gluten free doughnuts (and probably understandably spat them out 😂) there are some which are edible. Not brilliant, not what you’d fondly think of as a doughnut but tiny little rounds that certainly hit that doughnut flavour spot.

I’m partial to getting 2 or 3 out of the freezer when the desire for a cup of tea and something sweet happens.

Apparently, it was Dutch immigrants to the USA, back in the 17th/18th century (when New York was actually New Amsterdam). They made something called olykoeks (oily cakes). Later on, the centre of these doughnuts was filled with fruit and nuts, so as to avoid an uncooked centre. The hole in the middle of the doughnut apparently came to be in the late 19th century (and there are several versions), when a sailor plonked the dough on one of the handles of the ship's wheel.(That sounds a bit dubious, but fun!) The first doughnut machine appeared in New York in 1920, invented by Adolph Levitt, a Russian refugee. Krispy Kreme started up in 1935.

Yeah, that's what I said. Olykoek is the predecessor of the modern Dutch oliebol, a doughnut with raisins and apple.
But American doughnuts are better, imo.

I really couldn't say, never having eaten an oliebol or olykoek.
British doughnuts tend to be a whole lot heavier.
Best doughnuts I've ever tasted came from an artisan shop in Silvertown, Ohio - about 10 minutes from where my son used to live.
I'm not a fan of Krispy Kreme - wrong texture, faaaar too sweet.
