Eaten something you regret?

Never had longan or alligator - medtran49 - what are they like and what did you dislike about them?
Fishy chicken.

Don't remember about longan, very long time ago. What I do remember was having to excuse myself to spit it out before I vomited. Meanwhile, our friend who grew them, and my DH were happily munching on them.

We ordered some oysters once and they brought us something called "mother-of-pearl" oysters. Tasted like a glob of plasticine. Never again.
And for the record, I wouldn't eat grits again either.
Ahem, read the post above your one! 😂
Just deleted mine - sorry, I was on another page!!

Yes, tofu!! I hate that stuff! It made me feel as though I had a big piece of fat in my mouth!!! I spat it out & spazzed out!!!!!! I'll never eat that again!!!!!!! :ninja:

I love grits! Plain, with salt and pepper, or butter, or cheese, or shrimp or whatever. But as medtran49 said, they need to be cooked properly. Usually longer than you would expect.

One very memorable meal I had was years ago, at a place here in Salt Lake called Zacheo's. Had the BEST deep dish, Sicilian, whatever you want to call it "pizza". So good! Went in one night for dinner and the special was chile verde. At an Italian restaurant? I tried it.

Memorable for all the wrong reasons! Basically canned Campbell's cream of potato soup ( which I heated up often enough in one of the uh, less fancy kitchens I worked in to recognize it immediately ) with canned green chilies dumped in. And some scraps of leftover pork roast or something from days before. NOT what I was hoping for at all, yuck!

mjb.

Driving back to Georgia from Nevada I stopped somewhere in Arizona to spend the night. It was a hotel, a gas station, and a closed restaurant. I got a, good when I ate it, jalapeno hotdog at the gas station. Threw up for the next 6 hours, no telling how long it had been sitting there...

Sorry to hear.
I am always worried about food like that...

Another thing that I can't eat is chopped nuts. It makes me choke. I start coughing so wildly to the point where I'm about to throw up!! 0nce at this eatery that a friend & I go to, we were were there one evening, he offered me some chopped peanuts that he was eating, I accepted some, ate them & paid for it dearly!!! We had just eaten dinner. I was coughing so badly that I had to go to the bathroom. Once there, I threw up all the food that I ate!! What a waste of food!!!!! So I can no longer eat chopped nuts. I'll ended up having a good a good relationship with the toilet!!!! Can't eat chunky peanut butter, either. Same thing happens. It is almost as though I'm allergic to peanuts!!!! :headshake:

Many times I've regretted eating spicy food too late in the evening, which gave me wicked heartburn in the middle of the night.

Beyond that, okra comes to mind. I thought I'd try it once and boiled it just like peas. Boiling rendered it into elephant snot. It was absolutely disgusting and that was the last time I tried it.

Another one is plant based, fake meat. Years ago when Burger King began selling their "Beyond Burger", using Beyond Meat's fake meat, I had no idea what it was when I ordered one at the drive through. When I got home, I took one bite, spit it out, and threw the rest in the trash. I later mentioned to my wife that I had gotten bad meat from BK that afternoon, and she laughed and informed me that I had bought their new fake meat burger.

Okra helps make gumbo thick! 🤤

You can either fry okra & eat it over rice like our mom used to do, or if you put it in things like soup or stew, wait until the last several minutes that the soup is cooking. You can't cook it too long, otherwise you'll end up with "elephant snots", like you said. The trick is to not let it cook for so long to avoid it being gross looking. Another thing that I don't eat is dropped egg soup like at Chinese places. It looks so bloody gross!!!! That looks like elephant snots!!!!!!! :ninja:
