I've got a blog post on the National Garden Association site on my first go at planting garlic. That link is here.

I plant my garlic, in a bed, on Halloween for a harvest in midsummer. I was queried about growing in pots and that's not difficult. You'll need at least 8" of soil in the pot and plant 2" deep. I've seen posts where people plant a bulb for every 4 square inches, (2"x2"), but thats too close together, IMHO.

I like space between mine, I go with a foot but then I've that.

Do you buy your bulbs/cloves?
Or do you use ones from the shop?

Edit: OK, should have read the blog first.

I need to find a tropical garlic variety....
My soil temperature will never get as low as 12-13 oC

Lots of it comes from Venezuela and Peru.
Didn't know that about Vzlan garlic. It's called "criollo" (native) garlic here to distinguish it from the imported stuff. It's super-potent and flavourful, but the cloves are often tiny and fiddly to peel. That's the only drawback.
Ginger from Peru - yep, we've got that too. Since I use about 1 kg every month, the bigger the rhizome, the better. I grow it in the garden, too, and it grows far bigger and better if the soil is loose and sandy.

She got a proper cold period as well, which we don't get.
And it seems that's essential
It is, it's called vernalization. It's why garlic from the store sprouts after you get it home. It's stored in refrigeration, so it thinks it's winter, and when it warms up in the store, think springtime, it sprouts.

For my harvested garlic I put it in a paper bag in the fridge at the end of August and it gets planted at the end of October. Have to let it come to room temperature for several days before planting.

Really interesting - I've grown shallots here (with watering) that produced really well, but never garlic.

Also wondering about the cultivation techniques shown - I know what mulching is about, but what's the cardboard for? I know some of the local permaculture people use it in a particular way.
