Homesick

But the distance between Venezuela and England compared to Italy and Ireland is so far off! How long does it take you to get to England (if you had a straight flight) including the time to and from the airport? I am sure that @MypinchofItaly can get back to Italy much faster.
That's irrelevant. Your home country is your home country. Italy is 300 miles from Croatia. Hungary is 300 miles from Austria. New York is 372 miles from Montreal. Belgium is next toFrance. Ireland is 1500 miles from Italy. Different cultures, different social life, different everything.
Ohio is 1,000 miles from Florida, but the same language, the same culture, the same food - maybe not the same climate, though :D

You'd be wrong about a lot of that. if I were to go to Key West, that's almost 1400 miles. I can tell you've never spent much time in the south or especially Florida, or you'd know that the food is NOT the same, nor is the culture by a long shot...and if you'd been paying attention to my posts about that over the past few years you would know that, but my guess is you must have found it irrelevant...ah well. Most of my previous post wasn't directed to you anyway

MypinchofItaly I am so sorry. Being homesick can sneak up on you and hit you hard.
We left Hawaii back in 2007 and have only been back since 4 times in these, oh my gawd, 17 years!
I hadn't thought about it that way until now ...
Believe me, I've spent many a night crying myself to sleep, longing for HOME!
We do have a trip planned for later this year, so there's that.
And karadekoolaid I must beg to differ with you.
Everything about Hawaii and Arizona are worlds apart. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but you are right, home is home, period.

Right, just like Barriehie could tell us about the cultural differences between New Orleans and Georgia. Not all that far apart (450 miles) but very different culturally.

Both MrsT and I get homesick…for England. It’s why we watch so much British TV - the accents sound “normal” to us, and the scenery isn’t just something nice to look at, it’s a place where we both feel we belong.

For me, it’s the only place I’ve ever felt 100% comfortable, natural and not self-conscious. Whenever we land and get off the plane, as soon as I step outside, there’s a massive feeling of relief, almost like I’ve been holding my breath since the last time I was there, and can exhale and just…relax.

Everywhere else, I’m just visiting, but England always feels like home, so yeah, we both get homesick for it.

It's also difficult for a person from a country that uses the metric system and a person who uses the American standard of miles to relate distances (unless they are very familiar to both), which is why I often post it in travel time instead of miles when discussing how far away something/someone is in the US to make it easier.

I have a sister who lives in Seattle, Washington which is very far NW on the Pacific Ocean. If I were to drive to visit her, it would take about 37 hours in a car not including stops for food, fuel, sleep, etc. By plane it would be just over 5 hours (not including driving to and from the airport).

Another sister lives in Austin, Texas, and it would take me about 20 hours driving straight through with no stops and just over 6 hours by plane including a layover because there are no non-stop flights available at this time.

Just the state of Florida is amazingly vast. I drove once to Key West when I lived in Destin and it took me about 14 hours to get there. It takes a little more than 5 hours to drive across the northern part of the state from the Alabama state line to Jacksonville on the Atlantic Ocean side.

This makes me curious how long it takes to get across some of the EU and SA countries. karadekoolaid, how long does it take to get across Venezuela? Is there decent transit there? How is the infrastructure, do you have good roads? How about other forum members countries, how quick can you get from one side of your country to another, and what means do you choose to travel?
It’s an interesting point. I always work in how many hours something takes rather than distance. People always looks surprised when I don’t know how many miles I’ve ridden.

I always think that’s irrelevant because if I spent all day riding B roads somewhere it has a totally different toll on you than riding fast down a motorway and covering a lot of miles.

I don’t like it when people only tell you the flight time but neglect to mention the transfer is triple that. For me it’s always the length of time spent travelling and the enjoyment of the route that matters.

For example the ‘Excel’ arena in London has an excellent motorcycle show I don’t go to because it’s absolutely awful to get to.
I can (in theory) get to the centre of London in my car in 2hrs 30mins and the Excel due to its piggish location is 3hrs 10min.
There is only 9.5miles between Londons centre and the Excel yet this will take a minimum of 45 mins to negotiate.

I agree completely it’s about the quality of the journey.

I lived in Italy for about 4 months during my youth. I loved it and, particularly I liked the people. Italians have become masters at mastering life; They were patient with my lack of Italian language. I would speak Spanish to them slowly and they would respond with slow Italian. We managed. Great food too. You are from the North. My time there was more to the South on the Amalfi coast of the Bay of Naples.

Well, at least "si" and "no" were well understood.

Thank you for your thought kaneohegirlinaz. I like being here in Ireland, as well as I liked being in the UK often, but lately I started to feel myself a bit lonely and uncomfortable.. I think it is normal after some time far from home, it feels like living in a half mood, if you know what I mean.
Maybe not having access to direct flights from Cork to Milan it makes it more difficult as the direct flights will reopen only in summer.
For now I have to go up to Dublin (3 hours train) then take a flight to Milan.
I know that our distances/times may sound silly to those who live in wider countries 😔

No, not silly at all. It's a source of frustration to have to travel any distance longer than 30 minutes to get to the airport, in my opinion. I do believe that most people share that feeling. I have to drive (or have someone drive me) 45 +minutes to the larger airport in Cleveland to fly home, and if I drive and use airport parking, it's costly. There is no train for me to take, which would be nice, but if I had to travel by train for 3 hours just to get to the airport, that would be more than annoying!

For years my airline of choice would fly directly from our smaller airport (15 minutes away) to the airport near home in Florida, but they discontinued flying out of that airport about a decade ago

Edited to add that I would rather fly if possible if the travel time is longer than 7 hours, but rental cars are double what they used to be so now it depends on how much more travel is involved upon arrival to a destination. When we go to Mexico we fly and use a shuttle to the resort and then stay close to the resort for the entire time.

I can see where you're coming from. Hawaii (according to my googling!) is over 2,400 miles from mainland USA. Different culture, different people. A long way from home in Cowboyville!
Not to mention, The Hawaiian Archipelago is smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!
