I did without a fridge for about a week when I first moved in here, for some reason that I don't recall now. Maybe the store couldn't deliver it until then. I used a cooler filled with ice, and I kept the thermostat in the house fairly low, around 73, I think, so the ice would last longer. I don't recall anything going bad in the cooler. I replaced the ice a couple of times, and didn't have all that much in there besides cream, butter, and probably some sandwich meat and cheese, since I wasn't doing much cooking because I was busy unpacking.
