One of our local grocers is carrying canned Octopus packed in oil and garlic. I've never tried octopus before, but I have eaten a lot of squid. I probably wouldn't be bothered to go buy fresh octopus and cook it, but I'm curious if the canned variety is any good. If so, how is it typically prepared? Just eaten as is? Or mixed into something?

I've tried octopus rings sold in jars of oil, but not in a can. I think it would be similar and the garlic will give it some flavor, if you like garlic. The octopus itself does not have much taste. It has a slightly rubbery texture but not in an unpleasant way. I think if you like squid than you will also like the octopus. Why not give it a go? Or is it quite expensive to buy canned?

I would recommend it to be eaten with a nice fresh salad.

Most canned products of anything, are not going to be as good as if you can buy it fresh. When it comes to seafood, I would stay away from canned. You just don't know exactly where that stuff is actually coming from. Octopus tastes great though if you can buy it fresh!
