My Mother will look each and every label of any sort of food item and follow it the letter.
I buy her frozen single-serve meals, but if by chance it has that stupid 2 portions per container đź’©, she follows it and simply puts the rest of the microwave tray in the `fridge with that leftover half, which in my opinion, is ridiculously small!
MA!!!!! Eat it all for crying out loud! Then you forget all about it and I have to throw it out ... "oh no dear, it's still good."

Like my Mom saving cheese... There are never before seen fuzzy colors on some of those. Either myself or my sister will dump the drawer, wash it, and put some new cheeses in there. 🫣

My mom was the same. Depression era parents. When I went to Florida on one trip (I went at least 1x a year for a few weeks to visit and to clean and throw stuff out) I was making a sandwich with deli meat and bread I had purchased and before I'd left for the store I asked her if she had any mayonnaise. She said yes, and I asked how old it was. She said she'd just bought it "the other day". I looked at the date when making my sandwich and the best buy date was more than 2 years past. Into the trash it went. My sandwich had mustard as the only condiment that day.

Alright, last OT. She's got stuff in her pantry from the '70's but keeps it since it came from New Orleans. Like she goes every month... 🤷‍♂️
(You should see how many layers hot sauce turns into.)

Expiry dates are somewhat of a mystery occasionally. Vinegar is a good example - as far as I'm concerned, it never expires.
Spices and herbs get sniffed and tasted. If there's a musty smell - out. If there's no flavour left when I taste - out. Same goes for anything else, including tinned products.

I take very little notice of food dates. If it's out of date, so what. I'll know if it is bad etc. It's easier being vegan, but even so...

My mother and step-father on the other hand are highly religious on the subject. Whilst I was there, I saw then throw out many items that were 1 or 2 days out of date. They never looked at the product, e.g. crumpets, to see if they were visibly mouldy or bad. Most were unopened items as well, so not even exposed to air to go stale. Just threw them out and added them to the next shopping list. :headshake:

Wow, no way could I afford that behavior or waste.

I personally think “Sell By” and "Best if used by" are greed based scare tactics. To prompt gullible people into throwing still good food away and replace it. There were no “Sell By” and "Best if used by" when I was growing up and we were just fine. I think it was prompted by manufactures to boost profits. GREED JMHO

I'm not sure.
Far as I know, they are just (statistical) guarantees by the producer (following a bell curve)
At such and such date, 99 % (or 95< depending on the country) of the produce is still fine. If not, you as a consumer can put in a claim.
Unfortunately, people have understood it wrong or it has been explained wrong.
Some people think all produce will be off at exactly that date, but it's only a minimal amount that will be off

Agree, somebody driving a spreadsheet looking for a bonus.
