Lowquats (aka Japanese Plums)

I only know of it as an ornamental shrub in the UK. I've never eaten the fruit but I gather it is good for pies, tarts, jam and jelly.

They grow wild in Venezuela as well. I´ve got 4 trees in the garden.
Loquats are sometimes called Japanese medlars, although the medlar is a different fruit.
The fruit is delicious, if you get a chance to eat it before the parakeets, bluebirds and guacharacas get hold of it. It´s slightly acidic, a bit of peach/apricot, sweetish.
When you cook with it, it´s a bit fiddly; there´s a pit (or perhaps two or three) in the middle, surrounded by a scaly covering which is tricky to remove. I once harvested 10 kgs from my garden and gave them to my kitchen staff to make jam. It took them ALL DAY to clean the fruit!

Has anyone had/tried these? They grow wild around here.
Yep, have a few neighbors in Pembroke Pines with them. I may or may not have stolen a few fruit hanging low over a fence once or twice. I agree with karadekoolaid they definitely had a flavor similar to apricots... but not much to eat when you look at the flesh-to-seed ratio. I think I have a picture on my phone...
