I haven't noticed that. Both show exactly the same for me.

It may be due to my being on a phone instead of a laptop.

I'm always on a phone and the lightning bolt pulls up a horizontal scroll bar listing all new categories.

But it does watch by default, I believe.

It only watches threads you have replied to by default. Not all threads veiwed.

I use one step extra, after the lightning symbol. What's new is everything

clicking on the 3rd link will give this (which is what is unread and watched - watched being you have replied to it or manually clicked the watch thread option)

I'll grab the mobile shots in a moment - BTW you do not need to move to a mobile device to get screenshots of the mobile interface - all you need to do, is to resize your web browser until it kicks into tablet mode and then mobile mode!

Finally, there is also another option,

If you click on the black cross for "Show only: watched", you will get everything new that you have not yet read, which is what I think you are actually after. Z-Cook
