A southern tradition is to cook black eye peas on New Year's Day. This food is supposed to bring the cook and family good luck. Normally, it's eaten with cornbread and collard greens.

Don't forget a little ham along with that. Add a little rice and it's called hoppin john and is widely considered the traditional Southern New Year's recipe. Some author's attribute the name to Wade Hampton III from during the depression linked to Reconstruction. Good eating.
