Plans for today (2026)

Seven hours is a lot of standing! Last week I had to do about 3 hours of standing on 3 consecutive days (events for work) and my muscles were sore afterwards - shows you how much time I normally spend sitting at work! (I have a desk job).
I had a desk job for three years and couldn't stand it! I went back to my FE job where I could walk 3+ miles a day and do around 20 flights of stairs. Now 10 minutes round trip to the mailbox is it. 😉

My plans for today needed a list making.

Great weekend! I wrapped up early on Friday and headed to the range. The M1 Garand and M1 Carbine on the far right were both manufactured in 1943 and quite likely saw action in WWII.

I compete occasionally, with an H&R Garand from the Korean War era. The leather and canvas hardback shooting coat is permitted in competition.

Gotta love the last round Garand "Ping"!

We had two cords of firewood delivered recently and shuttled it into the backyard earlier in the week.

Saturday, I spent four hours stacking those two cords, plus another cord of pear I'd split into my annual holzhausen for next winter. I plan to purchase two more cords in the near future to finish it off. Afterwards, we had family over to play cards until late at night.

Today marked Round 1 of our Spring yard cleanup. I trimmed a ton of limbs, and we all raked up a ton of leaves, sticks, and pine needles, and made three trips to dump them all off at our Township's yard waste recycling center. I also ran over to one of my rental properties to take care of an issue they had. I still need to rake up around the sides of the house, replace some shrubs that didn't make it over this brutal winter, power wash the siding, sidewalks, porch, and patio, and then prepare our garden.

It was a gorgeous 75* day here, so by mid-afternoon, I called it quits to enjoy a nice cigar and some sunshine on the back porch, before throwing some burgers on the grill. Storms are now rolling in, and so once Mrs. GH is done with a phone call on the porch, we're going to watch a couple more episodes of the The Madison before the work week starts again tomorrow.

Nothing like busy to make the "sit down" awesome! 😉

I've got a Springfield M1903 I bought at a gun show for $125 that saw action in WWI. Awesomely accurate... 👌

I’m intrigued by the N.12 - Frog recordings? What does it mean? 🤔
I participate in frog research. I record the frogs around around our farm each night, and identify what I can by sound, and submit it to the Australia National museum... we have 7 species of frogs in the dams on the farm. Sometimes i an convinced sleeping in a jungle would be quieter!

FrogID

The Australian Museum's FrogID project harnesses the work of citizen scientists to power frog research and conservation.

They listen and analyse the results (even when no frogs are calling). It allows them to actually know more about the frogs on private property/land than in the national parks.

I'm into my 4th year now recording usually 5 or 6 times a week. But sometimes I'll record in the middle of the night if I hear one very clearly. But with my phone on silent, I can't play back that recording, and identify the frog. So the note N12 is a reminder to remember to listen, identify and submit the backlog of recordings on my phone.

What an amazing thing, must be so interesting and useful, even poetic - maybe except sometimes for the noise from those guys. I wish I could hear at that frog sound at least one time.

Mostly here we've got crickets. You can hear the frogs when the creeks are full. You know you can figure the temperature in °F, pretty close, by the rate the crickets chirp? 😱
