I've had my current potato peeler for around 18 years. And it's never been sharpened. My chef's knives are sharpened probably before ever third use unless cutting meat then they are sharpened every time.

Why is it that my potato peeler doesn't appear to ever need sharpening?

Probably the light duty. Potato skins are not likely to be hard on a blade. Since it is not meant to be sharpened, it is probably a pretty hard steel, too.

What is amazing to me is how quickly fingernail and toenail clippers become dull. Plus, you really can't sharpen them. I never get a full year of easy use out of them.

Mostly because you have gotten used to it being dull. Also, peelers aren't used against cutting boards and cutting boards are murder on edges.
