Is there a way for someone with access to it to be able to put numbers next to site alerts when you click on the icon? It might just be me, but when there's a lot of alerts after I read what the previous one was about, I can't remember where I left off and end up clicking on the same alert 2 or 3 times and the process of looking at 10 alerts ends of taking 10 times longer. Or maybe a way for the site to let you know you've already clicked on it and viewed it? Like greying it out or something? Just curious, is that something that is possible?

The site already does this for you in any number of ways.

I had 31 alerts this morning.

Clicking on that number brings up a list showing the first page of those.

Initially all will have the black dot alongside them, including reactions. Reactions will disappear and be marked as seen after 10 seconds.

The black dot and slightly grayer background shows a thread as unread in red above. Read, new posts such as this one, show without the dot and on a lighter background.

If i tap on one with a black dot, it takes me directly to the last unread post in that thread.

If I tap on one that I've already read, it will take me to the start of the thread instead.

If i have not yet read the thread since the last alert (so say several days ago), I won't get another alert about unread messages until I have read that thread. I will however tap on an alert for a reaction, then it will take me to the post with that reaction, so feels like the system isn't doing what you expect. But it is because I told it to take me to the post with the reaction when I tapped on that alert.

So I typically catch up on unread threads by using the "what's new" feature instead.

The mobile view differs from the desktop view at this point, but the concept is similar. Click on the lightning icon, and then on " New Posts".

I now see a list of all threads that I have posted in, that have unread posts in them. Clicking on the title takes me to the first unread post in that thread. The system will then mark all posts on that page as read for that thread. Unless I read the next page, the thread will remain as having unread posts (assuming that unread posts cover more than 1 page). And this is the bit that catches people out, unless you skip to the very end of the thread and read the last post. The alerts for this thread will not reset until you read the final (current) post in that thread. The alternative is to use the "mark as read" option at the top of the page for that specific thread.

You will also see that threads where i have not read all or any posts from are in bold.

The same applies to forums as well. If you have read all threads in the forum, the forum displays differently from others on the main view.

All of this affects where the system takes you to when you click on the alerts button.

If a thread still shows in your what's new list, you've not read enough or all of it for the alerts to tell you anything other than new reactions, or replies (where they've quoted you) or new mentions (the @ membername). Click on any of those and you get taken to where that alert was generated.

Unless it says "xyz replied to thread name, there may be more posts after this post" the link will take you to where that event took place. If it says "xyz replied to...." it will take you to the first unread post is.

If the system is not doing any of this, you need to reset where you are up to by going to the "What's New" page and clicking mark all forums read.

You can also mark each forum one by one as read, by going to that forum list and clicking on the mark as read button at the top of each forum. However that will only reset the alerts for that forum.
