My husband was diagnosed with conic acid reflux and should not be eating any fatty foods, acid foods, or caffine. I really want to start cooking some healthy dishes for him, but I am not sure where to turn. Do any of you have any websites you could point me to?

There's a lot of websites out there if you google - but you will find conflicting advice. For example as the CookingBites Recipe Challenge current judge, I'm particularly interested in lentils at the moment (the chosen Challenge ingredient). I found a lot of websites which said they caused acid reflux or made symptoms worse. But I also found just as many which said they were recommended to help! I suffer somewhat from GERD or acid eflux and so does my daughter. I've found that the best policy is to follow your own experience. For me, for example, its generally high fat foods which cause problems. And certainly it seems to be generally accepted to avoid high fat food. Spices don't affect me at all despite the fact that most advice says to avoid!

Try to identify which foods are causing the problem would be my advice. In general, low fat foods seems to be best advice and eat lots of vegetables and fruits such as bananas and apples (the latter advice appears a lot on multiple websites). If I were you I'd start by eliminating as much fat as possible and see what happens.

I also suffer from Acid Reflux! What I have found is you have to steer clear of high acid foods. Tomatoes and citrus drive me crazy with pain. Fried food are also a trigger. At one time I went Gluten Free and I did feel really good, it's hard but I still try to eat as little Gluten as possible. If I eat healthy, meaning a lot of green then I don't require the medications. I absolutely recommend Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes. Basically, though, keep your food as simple and clean as you can. Walking helps too.

My husband is supposed to avoid spicy and fatty foods. I am just going to have to keep experimenting and see how he tolerates each dish that I prepare. Last night we had baked chicken pattie sandwiches and tater tots as I was able to bake those items and avoid frying them. The night before that, we had potstickers and asian rice and veggies. I will keep looking around on line and see what I can find.

Omeprazole. Really. Been taking it for 3 years and can eat anything I like without problems. Why deprive yourself of food sensations when a simple drug can fix the problem? Life's too short

I like your thinking here. He has been eating bland food and is miserable even though he is leading me to believe otherwise. I have been trying to support him by watching what I eat and cooking healthy food for him, but I am already craving a cheeseburger something fierce lol. The doctor told him not to do research online because there really are so many conflicting studies out there. We have decided just to try and not eat processed food, and only eat things that are natural.

I had a problem with acid reflux last year, it was only when the ENT specialist stuck a camera up my nose and down my throat I found out what the problem was. I had previously had a very bad cold and laryngitis so though it was a lingering effect apparently not. I was advised to stay away from fatty, acid foods, fruits/juices- alcohol, cheese, chocolate which I did and after a month's course of medicine and avoiding the nasties I was a lot better. I no longer have vinegar on my chips, eat apples, pears, oranges or drink the juices and this has helped me greatly. I understand that my issue was temporary and others have a much more serious medical health issue. It isn't easy changing your ways and avoiding what you really like.

I've just seen this thread! If I avoided all the foods I'm supposed to avoid because of acid reflux and because of my throat problems, and avoided all the foods I'm allergic to or intolerant of, I'd die of starvation. The only things I really try to stick to are decaf tea and decaf coffee because of my throat problems - I really notice the difference after only one cup of the regular kinds.

My mom had a bleeding ulcer in 2015 and they told her to drink decaf tea/coffee, and only take Tylenol for pain. They also gave her Protonix to take (1 pill 2x daily for the rest of her life, she also took antibiotics for 30 days because she had the type of ulcer that was caused by h pylori).

I take Lansoprazole which is a PPI similar to Protonix. I have to take this for the rest of my life too, and it also combats some of the side effects of my other meds. The only painkiller I can have is Paracetamol but I rarely take it. I have a high pain threshold - handy when having surgical procedures without local anaesthetic (to which I am allergic!).
