That’s what I’m calling it, at least. I got fired, and it’s turned into a sort of retirement. “Refired” sounds like I’ve gotten galvanized. It’s actually been the opposite. In a good way.
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to get back to all of you good folk, but a lot has happened since I last wrote you.
As you may recall on the previous installment of “The Adventures of the Late Night Gourmet”, Rob was fired by Ford Motor Company after 37 years. Things were up in the air, but Rob was optimistic.
I can’t believe how wrong I was about retired life. It’s so much better than I could’ve imagined. I may have mentioned my pension is being taken as a lump sum, which will pay off my house and my new Ford Bronco (how’s that for timing?)
So, my major expenses will be gone. Figuring out how to pay for things is easier when you don’t have to pay for so many things. It’s taking longer than they originally promised to transfer the money to my account, but they have promised July 15.
I also unexpectedly got severance pay. They did promise nine months of continued insurance coverage, which is great. They also gave me nine months’ pay. I was afraid at first that they made a mistake, and thought this is my total amount due for my pension. But, it’s a fantastic bonus.
It actually gets better. About 15 years ago, I worked with a guy who did aftermarket calibrations on V8 Ford Mustangs. He still does, and he’s diversifying into other areas. Apparently I made a good enough impression back then that he offered me a part time job at half my original pay on the spot.
I just had my best week of work in my life this week, although it was strange. He doesn’t have the new contract yet for some projects, but he wanted to make sure I was available when he needed me. I’m basically like a lawyer on retainer, and right now I’m developing a tracking system to help organize the software that they develop. It’s not full-time work, and it’s wonderful.
I truly don’t understand what this is like. For 41 years total, I worked full-time, and then some, to support myself. I never knew anything else as an adult, if you can call 21 “adult“. I couldn’t even conceive being able to stop, but it seems like it will work out.
I definitely do want to get more into creative cooking again, but there are a lot of life adjustments happening right now. But, don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere.
