Sloe Gin - which gin?

I've picked some sloes to make sloe gin - anyone got any recommendations for a cheap brand of gin to use - something not too rough?

I think someone on Cyclechat said the Aldi gin is ok, but that Sainsburys Basic wasn't bad either....

My Ma and Pa use Sainsbury's basics gin for their damson gin. Tastes alright to me.
Mind you they have been known to put Aldi gin into a Bombay Saphire Gin bottle and their chums don't seem to notice.

I bought a bottle of Basics gin today - it was a double points weekend so I took advantage. I'll make it up tomorrow. Any tips on how much sugar to add for 70cl of gin and about 1lb of sloes?
