One of the most obvious issues with social media is the way it has become so vitriolic. People posting hate and prejudice and inciting others.
And for kids social media can be really destructive
The big problem with social media is that there are no immediate paybacks. If you'd shouted out " Mary stayed out all night!" 50 years ago, you'd probably have got a smack in the mouth from Mary's boyfriend or dad. You can post whatever you like on social media these days with little, or no retribution, so people feel galvanised to express the most absurd opinions about anything; mostly, anything they know nothing about.
I'm on all social media ( except Twitter) because I use it to promote my Indian food/chutneys, etc. I use it with discretion, but recently discovered I'm on "Threads"- the FB version of Twitter. Recently, I've noticed some truly idiotic, childish, brainless, naive, ridiculous, simple-minded, empty-headed and moronic posts. Eg:
"Why is the food on Paris so bad? My pizza was dry, the tacos from Taco Bell were ok, but I hated the churros"
" If you don't tip 40% of the bill, then don't come back to my restaurant!"
"Why can't I get mac & cheese in Rome? It's pasta, right?"
" I just came back from Scotland and there were loads of men wearing skirts"
" Ieft some rice out overnight. Can I use it, or will I get botulism?"
Yes. True - but I just ignore them. In the olden days, if you really wanted to learn about something, you went to a library and looked it up. Not once, but two, three, four or five times, from different sources, so you actually got a consensus. You can do exactly the same on google, but only if you have the patience.
Social media can (and probably is) destructive for kids - but also for adults. Banning it for under 16s is really rather pointless, IMO.
