Soup Starter

The pork roast I made the other night, the gravy was a can of cream of mushroom soup, a packet of the beefy onion soup mix, and some water added to the pot. It's a nice, thick, flavorful gravy with zero additional help.
Or sometimes I will sprinkle it on top of the meat when slow cooking a chuck roast and use it like a seasoning.

I'm going to have to look into a dip.

Sounds like a handy shortcut for a tasy outcome. For some reason there isn't much of a tradition in the UK of using packet soup or canned soup as much other than what they are. I don't know why. 🤷‍♀️

Craig used to make Salisbury steak with the Lipton onion soup mix. I didn't really like it, as I thought it made the "steaks" dry, though I finally figured out the real reason. He made the "steaks" too thick, so it would take forever for them to cook through, resulting in hockey pucks for all intents and purposes. This was in our first few years together before we learned better ways.

I use the McCormack beef stew mix packet for stew and pot roast, though I use half and half water and beef stock for the liquid, plus some worchestershire.

After they stopped making Soup Starter, I tried a few others, but didn't like them as well, so stopped making soup regularly.

I always keep some Lipton Beefy Onion soup mix on hand.
I never used it to make soup with though.
I guess you could call it a roast starter the way I sometimes use it
I always have a couple pouches as well. That stuff is like a wonder ingredient. Soups, sauces, pot roasts etc... So versatile.

This is in the same vein, on sale today for $5.69:

Wow. Your Better Than Bouillon is priced like my small town grocery store. Maybe even higher.

Just realised that the soup mix posted by TastyReuben costs much more than the one here. The UK one is £2 (2.63 dollars) for 500g. The US one is approximately 9.64 dollars for 500g.

Not exactly the same product but a big difference.
