Most of my weekday meals start with an onion, and a tin of tomatoes. Sometimes, I'm chopping the onion before I've even decided what I'm cooking. With these two to start off, I can do pasta sauce, chilli, curry...

What wouldn't you be without?
Pasta, rice, onion (red & white), garlic, some tinned is your oyster!
Like Arch, I never run out of onions and tomatoes. Olive oil is another must have, and a selection of herbs and spices. And rice. Not so much pasta, as we don't eat a lot of it. I love it, but my husband's not keen, so it's an occasional treat. I always keep a jar of cooked chickpeas as well - you can do a lot with those.
