The benefits of turmeric

I grow turmeric in my garden by accident. I bought a nice pretty pot with flowers from a woman across from my hair place, then fast forward I never saw any flower again so I went out and investigated, I kept digging and found a lot of fresh turmeric underneath. The funny thing is after 10 years of growing them, I rarely see the flower snymore, not sure what I did wrong.

As for eating, even though I have hip arthritis, it doesn’t bother me, I don’t really eat turmeric frequently.

My husband had PF, plantar fasciitis, he went to see the foot doctor, they gave him some to wear for 8 weeks, very little effect until I made him some turmeric paste with honey, after consuming a spoon a day for how many days or weeks, the problem went completely away. However, after that he decided not to run anymore, he used to run daily for 5-7 miles. If he runs again he might have the problem.

Turmeric to me is like all other foods, fine in moderation.
Deliberately leaning into specific food groups isn’t IMO a good idea.
Turmeric for example is loaded with oxalates. Neuropathy is a real thing and something that’s often irreversible.
Oxalates in plant based foods are no joke. Oxalate poisoning is a known medical condition, it is entirely possible to make yourself incredibly unwell by eating a lot of oxalates.
If turmeric was a licensed medication rather than a food supplement it would some quite frightening information in the packaging.
So if you’re a turmeric lover/believer then maybe avoid the Sorrel soup 😂
 
My own doctor, who has some health complications, takes 1 Tbsp of Bragg's apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, as well as tumeric capsules every day for their health benefits, which he claims helps with his symptoms.
 
I know a lot of Dr’s and can confirm it’s entirely possible to be medically qualified and a total flake at the same time.
They are as vulnerable to BS as most people.
Not that I’m saying turmeric or apple cider vinegar is BS just that in my experience being a Dr doesn’t preclude them from also being dumb as - - - -
When someone says “My doctor says” as if it’s gospel I find my eyes involuntarily rolling.
I wish I’d written down some of the ludicrous hypotheses I’ve had to listen to.
It tends to go - logical statement, another logical statement, maybe another logical statement followed by a significant leap to something completely unconnected that’s presented as if it’s fact 😂

One Dr I know actually says FACT at the end of his sentences because in his words “No-one will challenge you” 🙄
 
The Indian ladies at the senior told me they eat fresh turmeric daily, this is why they asked me to give them each a plant.
What people maybe don't know is turmeric is also a blood thinner, be super careful in eating this root. My friend’s mom at work told me about turmeric paste and honey, she was 89 but bested everyone at the exercise place, she had lots of energy. But unfortunately, she died of aneurysm, I wonder if there’s a link between turmeric eating and aneurysm, of course I’m speculating, no official knowledge here. She also only used powder not fresh like I did.
And don’t bother buying the turmeric from Costco, it barely had an effect on my husband. The turmeric that I dug up is very mature and very potent.

Absolutely correct. I have 4 doctors on my side of the family and my husband has a niece who is also a doctor in London.

Turmeric is one of the most-used spices in Indian cooking, so it's not surprising the Indian community eats turmeric every single day.

Totally agree.People can easily become obsessed with a particular spice or element (magnesium comes to mind). There's also a whole pile of persuasive marketing and literature on the internet, in the chemists/pharmacies, on the TV, etc., which might, or could drive some to believe that they'll be healthier with x,y, or z product. Quite possibly, said product has never, ever appeared in their diet before, and might cause an unusual reaction in the digestive or nervous system.
My doctor's view is that, if you have a balanced diet, take plenty of exercise, don't abuse one particular food item and don't self-medicate, you'll probably be fine and will not need supplements.
 
This is the only turmeric flower I’ve seen in 10 years, this year I’m not digging up my turmeric, I just let my plants die down. Maybe I get some flowers eventually. Who knows?

They are lovely flowers. Often they are purple. Luckily I can buy root turmeric from a supermarket here. Its so much more fragrant and subtle than dried. I keep the root in the freezer and grate it into dishes from frozen.

When I bought them, they were purple and pink, I really don't know what I did that they turned white. I suspect the acid level in the soil but can’t confirm it. Very few people here know about gardening more than I do. Most people cement their yard.
 
I also have turmeric growing (along with ginger) the cardamom doesn't like our winter.

I also take one turmeric capsule twice a day (in a capsule, so it's a known amount). It helps considerably with inflammation from my spinal osteoarthritis. I can't take NSAIDs so there are no alternatives except for stronger pain medication. I already have a spinal neurostimulator and take morphine, plus another opioid based pain patch. With that combination, I can study and return to work. Without, not a hope, as the last 11 years have proven.

So, it is balancing act. Right now everyone is saying how much better i am and I look. And my doctor is happy with my blood tests and I am able to get out hiking up to 8km occasionally.

In my 40s, I had trouble sitting for even 2 hours, I thought I might go on disability or something. Then I came down to SoCal, and by accident I went to see an acupuncturist, before that I was really afraid of needles. She was very good and helped me cured my bad back. My insurance paid me to see her practical 2-3 times a week. She has since retired to China.
Now I have a stack of Tiger Balm jars in my draw, if I need to use it for pain relief I use it. My husband also uses it sometimes, but the smell is very strong though.

So you do what you can to relieve pain.
