The General Chat Thread (2025)

UK is in Europe geographically. Its just that we left the European Union, a move that is known as Brexit.
Before we fully joined the EU did you ever hear a single Brit consider themselves European or part of Europe? Or the UK referred to as Europe? Only Americans occasionally and even then that seemed to make Brits bristle 🤣
Geographically perhaps but the struggle ideologically was never won. As the sad cr*p that followed has shown 😂

Nope, I never got that mixed up.

So what continent is the UK part of?

SandwichShortOfAPicnic, I phoned Ocado and apparently they are released in stages across different regions to avoid website crashing.
Didn’t work, I waited til midnight and the website kept giving me the “oops we’ve run into a problem” message.
Finally booked a slot at 00.45am
Heyho it’s done now.
This year you can book another slot Christmas week if you’re prepared to pay!

It’s not. A continent is a large continuous land mass. The Britain is an Island 👍

And that may be true, but all I have in "the vaults", is that Britain was the same color as Europe on the school maps we learned from.
And you are connected by a tunnel ;)

But I will bow to their independence.
Now, about Ireland... :whistling:
:angelic:

I vaguely remember an episode of To the Manor Born that involved some kooky new regulations being imposed on this or that, and the workman or official or whomever it was explained that, “It’s meant to bring us in line with the rest of Europe,” Audrey fforbes-Hamilton threw her head back and haughtily retorted, “But we’re British!”

That was one of the first things we covered in our “Better Know Your Host Nation” training (or whatever it was called) - Wales is not England, Scotland is not Wales, Great Britain is not Europe, and don’t even ask about Northern Ireland.”

Well, I think of myself as both European and British. But maybe that's unusual? Dunno! But I was meaning that geographically the UK is part of Europe. Ireland is part of Europe too. I do think it quite confusing that we have the terms Great Britain (or simply Britain) as well as United Kingdom. UK includes Northern Ireland (the political unit of Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England) But Britain is the geographical island and doesn't include Northern Ireland. Its all very confusing. Southern Ireland is part of the European Union and has its own government.

Funnily enough I don’t think of myself as European, more as someone who would like to be 😂
I was so sad when my red passport became blue.
When people ask I say I’m from the UK (rather than Great Britain) and “I’m British” rather then “I’m English”
I’ve noticed Welsh and Scottish people just say “I’m Welsh or I’m Scottish” which I think is nice.
I don’t think it’s unusual for the younger gen who’ve known nothing else to consider themselves European. Feel sorry for them having that taken away.

Who knows soon I maybe saying I’m from the Isle of Man, although Island nations being what they are I’ll never be Manx!
They have special categories for new settlers -
“A “comeover” has lived on the island for fewer than 10 years.
“A stopover” for between 10 and 30 years
“A stayover” for 30 or more years!

Well I guess those that voted for Brexit took that away from you, too, not just the youngsters.

Some Americans are much less pleasant about their terms for "newbies" in their towns/regions.
