The General Chat Thread (2025)

Are those the ones that will lay an egg on you and you get a maggot under your skin?
Yes
But ironing your clothes will work, but I'm too lazy.
You can also dry your clothes in the full sun, as long as it is not under or on a tree or bush.
I've only ever had one and that was from a sleeveless shirt that wasn't fully dried when ironed, and not iron properly.
No cutting necessary, it came out almost by itself, just needed a little flick, and became fish feed (the GP had an aquarium) :bravo:

I had an iron somewhere in time...

Storms moving through. I got home from work and it started pouring down about 15 minutes later.

I'm feeling really tired today, sick of having insomnia.
I used to have insomnia but that slowly stopped. Now I wake up 3 times a night but I can go back to sleep. It's not as debilitating as insomnia but it's still a bother.

Yeah, the bad weather is affecting lots of places. Bob the Builder (ie. my civil engineering son) came home from work early and shot off to the airport to fly out to NC (he's got a project there). They had 9 inches of rain last night and the construction site is flooded.

I have to say, we’ve had a WiFi-controlled garage door opener for years and years, but I never bothered connecting up that bit of it until a couple of months ago, and I don’t know how I’ve ever lived without it. It’s incredibly convenient.

I’ve never liked where they installed the control pad in the garage, it’s behind the door and annoying to get to, so now, whenever I need to open the door, I just do so with my phone.

What’s more…MrsT has a tendency to open the door and forget about it, and many’s the morning I’ve woken up, gone out, and found it’s been open all night.

Now, just a quick check with my phone, I can see that it’s closed.

That's very convenient. Maybe we should do that. There are times where a leaf or something blocks the sensor and I see it closing, only to notice (when I look back) that it popped back open.

I was just glad years ago to have a garage door that opened with a mechanism instead of me having to get out and pull the damn thing up or down as needed. I suppose I should get with the new technology since it's available.

Of course, I’m already behind because I don’t have it hooked into a virtual assistant. My niece simply asks Alexis or Siri or one of those helpful girls, “Is the garage door open?” and she comes back with, “Yes. Would you like to close it?”

I haven’t gotten there yet. One step at a time.

Yeah, my brother's wife in Houston last time I visited even had her lamps hooked up to Alexa! "Alexa, living room lamp off." She will play music requests on command, too. What I don't like is how Alexa listens to conversations.

"What I don't like is how Alexa listens to conversations."

it has to be listening all the time - otherwise it cannot "obey" voice commands.
Obviously.
which is why it will never make it into my house....

I can deal with pushing/tapping/clicking a button/other - but not going to have anything listening to my life . . .
Same.

Edited to add that its not just Alexa listening to conversations. Not just Apple products, android phones do as well.

Yeah, I figure the “it’s listening to me” boat sailed a long time ago, so that isn’t even that much of a concern of mine these days.

My main problem is, I’d get it all set up and it would work great for two years, then it would stop for whatever reason, and I wouldn’t remember how I’d set it up in the first place, and I’ll be damned if I’m calling a nephew for help!

not just Alexi - absolutely true. all the voice command "assistants" do the same.
if you want to scare yourself right good, get some "port monitoring" software and check the log(s) of all the places your Windows computer talks to behind your back....

"in the old days" . . . . "somebody" would have to listen to (the presumed recordings) of everything in your house to ensure you're not a terrorist.

invent: voice recognition. reduces the workload to some few key words . . . still requires several million people to monitor . . .
invent: AI - automatically listens/evaluates everything - can instantly alert law enforcement if you so much a breath something illegal - compiles what junk mail and email spam you should get . . . no human effort required . . .

so yeah - all the sci-fi futuristic stuff . . . that can happen.
