Yeah, the founder created a whole “Jungle Jim” persona for himself decades ago, sort of a world adventurer, traveling all over to get the best, most unique things, and not just food items, he buys all sorts of things and repurposed them.
The Cincinnati Zoo, for example, used to have a large open Animal Kingdom back in the ‘70’s, with all these animals living cage-free in a more natural habitat, and they had a state-of-the-art monorail that ran through it. When it flopped, he bought the monorail and had it installed at the market, so it became an attraction in itself and a moment of nostalgia for a lot of people.
The place is absolutely massive, and there are two locations (Fairfield & Eastgate, both greater Cincy area), but when I was a kid back in the ‘70’s, all Jungle Jim’s was was a pop-up produce market - he’d set up sawhorses, put plywood down, set out his produce, sell it, and tear down at the end of the day.
Then he added a big tent, so he wouldn’t be affected by weather…then a couple of refrigerated cases for unusual pops and local eggs and things…then a small permanent structure…and so on and so on, until now, it’s the size of a small town, and it’s sort of like other stores within the main store - their cookware department, for example is bigger than any other freestanding cookware store I’ve ever been in, and with his nature of procuring this and that, you never quite know what you’re going to find there on any given day. When they imploded the old MLB baseball stadium, for example, he bought all the seats, and he sold those off to fans who wanted a little piece of nostalgia on their front porch.
It’s a fun place.
