1964 - Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., later known as Muhammad Ali, defeated Sonny Liston and became a world heavyweight champion.

I recall seeing some of his matches on TV while growing up.
 
Not that Ali wasn't a great athlete, but that's a weird type of historical date to pull out of the hat - saw that on a couple of on this day listings - sports dates innit

must be some or other ai bot spitting them out - like what about:

or:
