1912 National Biscuit Co. (Nabisco) introduces Oreo Biscuits, renamed Oreo Cream Sandwich in 1958.

1930 Retail frozen foods ('Birds Eye Frosted Foods') go on sale for the first time in a test marketing in Springfield, Massachusetts. Various fruits, vegetables, meat and fish were offered for sale to see how consumers would react to frozen foods. Clarence Birdseye had developed the method used to successfully freeze foods on a commercial scale. The test was a resounding success.

2007 Ernest Gallo died (born March 18, 1909). Co-founded E & J Gallo Winery with his brother Julio in 1933. It is the largest winery in the U.S. with about 25% of the U.S. wine market.

2012 Rebekah Speight of Dakota City, Nebraska sold a McDonald's Chicken McNugget that resembles President George Washington for $8,100 on eBay. She had kept the McNugget in her freezer for 3 years before deciding to sell it.

1804 A formal ceremony was held in St. Louis transferring ownership of the territory included in the Louisiana Purchase Treaty (April 30, 1803) from France to the U.S.

1862 The first U.S. paper money (national currency notes) were issued.

1867 Lillian D. Wald was born. She was a scientist and nurse, and among her activities, she helped initiate the enactment of pure food laws in the U.S.

1876 Alexander Graham Bell's first successful experiment with the telephone. He spoke through the instrument to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, in the next room. Bell writes, "I then shouted into M [the mouthpiece] the following sentence: 'Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you.' To my delight he came and declared that he had heard and understood what I said."

1955 Aaron 'Bunny' Lapin received U.S. patent No. 2,704,172 for pressurized containers designed to dispense his 'Reddi-Wip' whipped cream topping (which he developed in 1948).

1980 Herman Tarnower died (born March 18, 1910). American physician and author of the bestselling 'The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet' (1979). He was shot to death by Jean Harris.
