To start, and without looking it up, going due south from Detroit, MI, what is the first city you would come across?

You'd be "looking the opposite way". Not certain of the city though.

Is it Winsor, Canada? I was born in Detroit, but my parents moved us to Burbank, California when I was an infant. I seem to remember them saying something about Winsor being south of Detroit, but I'm not certain.

100% correct - it is indeed Windsor, ON. (unsurprisingly, it is one of canada's major auto industry centres).
