What’s going on in your garden (2026)?

And some more produce.

Tomatoes, potatoes (more to follow), yellow beans, Raspberries, Lebanese cucumbers, courgettes (2 varieties) and a few stocks of Rhubarb that came up in error.

There are also some more pears to collect off the ground.

So i have literally spent the day in the garden. Luckily I started early (9am) because I've only just finished at 5pm.

The shade cloth over the veg plot has been too dark this year, so it needed to be replaced. The plan had been just to put bird netting over the veg plot for winter.

But as all plans go, my plants had other ideas. At lunchtime they were wilting from the UV.... so the partial shading needed to go back on after the bird netting was on.

Just to complicate matters we're planning on raising the height of the tunnel this winter to make life a little easier on my back. That will be ready enough to do, but it's a 2 person job, with cordless drills and so on. Needs more planning because I've attached the rural polypipe to star pickets using nuts and bolts... and the pipe doesn't go all the way to the ground.

So with the bird netting on, some older shade cloth has been used. It's 2 different shade % reductions. The darker blue is thicker than the light brown and there's a mid brown in there as well. Just a case of what's lying around for used. Hopefully that will ripen the veg and fruit in there a bit faster before the season runs out and stops anything else getting too lanky.

I've rolled and cable tied the excess bird netting to the top of the sides for the tied being. It will be needed when we raise the height.

However, I didn't get the other 2 bulbs of garlic planted, not the new blueberries and strawberries. They will have to wait a few note days. The garlic is growing in water, so it's happy and not falling behind. I just need to find space and get the chook shit down for manure.

Later in the week, I think.

My fushia is also very happy at the moment. It likes Irish temperatures and conditions, so is laden with flowers.

This is the smallest of the 3 bushes. They get cut back to 50cm high in winter, every winter. Not that you can tell. But the wild birds and there native bees love it for its nectar and it best to watch them feeding from it. They're used to us so we can stand right next to the window and they'll actually try to get in if they can. It's those special moments that make keeping the bush alive during the height of summer so worthwhile. We have to water the bushes daily when it's dry and hot. They need water and our native soil drains too well.
