I knit my own with organic cotton. We find they work really well, and don't wear out for years. We just rotate them and put them through the wash as needed.
The closest thing to then is known as Swedish dish cloths. It minimises the amount of plastics in our house, food and septic tank.

I had to look those up. I think that's a great idea and I'm ordering some. I've been buying those plastic/sponge scrubbies for decades...

Anything from paper towels to sponges and green scrubby pads, to micro fiber cloths, to a huge random assortment of cotton kitchen tea towels. It just depends on what I'm cleaning up. I'll usually grab paper towels for chicken blood, heavy grease, and similar gross stuff, scrubby pads for stuck-on things, microfiber cloths for stainless appliances and cabinet faces, and usually a sponge and tea towel for general countertop cleaning. I do prefer some Williams Sonoma tea towels to keep over my shoulder while cooking, though, for less-nasty wiping/drying of hands, knives, and cutting boards, and grabbing hot things. They're big, heavy, and absorbent, which I like. I've never given much thought to it, actually. I guess it's just seems like common sense.

Yeah I sure never paid attention to the brand of scrubbies, sponges, etc. I've bought, but since the OP lives in the UK it probably doesn't matter.
