What did you cook or eat today? (December 2025)

I got crackers and cheeses, and meats from Aldi's to make a charcuterie platter, and I can't find the meats anywhere. 😭 😭 I blame my cat, he must have stolen the package and hid it.
I’ve done that, talked myself into thinking I must’ve left it at the store, then found four months later that it’d slid out of the bag and under the car seat…

A classical Southern grits casserole for Ashley, the piercer at the tattoo parlor. This one is amped up with fried Spam, sweet chili's, green onions, scrambled eggs, and the grits cooked in bone broth.

We did that with asparagus, in the summer, in South Florida.
It basically liquefied. It was my car and I worked from home so it was in there for at least a week. OMG, the smell!

Finally got round to making Mr SSOAP his steak and kidney pudding.
He was delighted, and so was I that it didn’t disintegrate into the filling after two hours steaming, GO CAPUTO Gluten free flour!!!

I have another one bubbling away on the stove because it’s one of those things that if you’re going to bother doing it you may as well double up!
I use more of a dumpling mix with plenty of baking powder because it’s lighter and doesn’t taste as stodgy.

That looks wonderful! Its one of my favourite things. You have done a fantastic job especially considering the gluten free. What type of suet or was it not with suet?

I had ramen noodles with King Oyster mushrooms, green onions, and left over pork yesterday. The broth came from my freezer, gelatinous trotter soup. My daughter particularly likes the King Oyster mushrooms.

Thanks MG 😊
I’d had some tesco suet (thats the only one without wheat) but not enough so I put some lard in the iciest part of the fridge and grated it into some flour (Caputo GF flour) then sieved it to remove the excess flour to make my own suet.
So it was a mix of two types.
The homemade suet did make exceptional dumplings last time so I’m undecided on what suet to use in the future until I’ve tucked into the pudding below and given it a proper taste test.

Eventually I found the second bag of tesco suet (knew it was somewhere 🙄) and made the next one with only that.
I made it in a glass casserole dish and won’t be turning this one out so peeps can help themselves to a chunk from the fridge as a when.

The colour difference was quite striking I used a darkish chicken stock for the liquid in the first one and milk in the second because I’m wanting to see which one I prefer.

It was 25 years ago I last made this before the internet was really a thing so I had a look and the advice to completely cook the filling and reduce the steam time to two hours seemed sensible.
It’s much better, much easier to control the final flavour of the filling. It benefited from being in the fridge overnight and stopped it from feeling like a marathon cook session 😂
