What did you cook or eat today (March 2026)

I took another hiking trip into the mountains today and covered an 8 mile loop to explore the ruins of another long-forgotten, 170 year-old coal mining village. I discovered more of the old town and actually found the mine entrances and coal breaker foundations, which was very cool. 👍 Lunch consisted of a Mountain House meal and some Earl grey tea, while sitting on top of the old tailings pile.

You're living one of my outdoors-y dreams with all that rugged hiking and cooking with twigs and stones and stuff. I wish I lived somewhere with close access to such beautiful wilderness.

After many months, probably years without making or eating this dish, I’m finally having it today! Probably someone’s gonna flip out about it 🤯
Liver and onions, I really love it. Onions cooked in a mix of Evoo and butter until very soft, nearly caramelised, liver roughly cut into piece, lightly floured and place into the pot (I’ve used a clay pot) with onion, 5 mins and ready.
...
Ever make a liver loaf?

Hah, 8 oz. of red beans later and a bit of simmer and all is good! My stew isn't stupid hot with cayenne any longer. 🤤

I needed some more freezer space so I removed a big back of frozen chili's.
I now got a big batch of very very hot sambal and nothing to dilute it with.
No onions, no tomatoes.
So I better mark this one properly to avoid 🔥🔥🌶️🌶️:pepper::pepper::pepper:
Like my jar that was labeled "Chili Mix 7/'25”, no mention of the quantity of fresh cayennes in there... 💥

Okaaayyyy
This is a combo of madam janet, african bird's eye, cayenne and some unknown's but hot ones.
And I'm not a light weight in chili heat (but an absolute push over in mustard/wasabi heat
I need that permanent marker for this lot :)

Red bell pepper or paprika next time!

Recipe says .....
mild chile peppers*
* In Venezuela there's a "sweet"chile, which looks like an habanero, but has little or no heat.

😅

But you've ended up with a nice spicy chili beans stew 😁

Red bells are too pricey for me when I've got jars of Chili's and peppers I grew last year albeit not quite labeled as I should have. I was happy to be preserving! 👍

Not so! 🙂

Same here! And super good for you too. Have it regularly only onions go into a separate gravy. Served with mashed potatoes. Brown sauce extra. Very meat n potatoes and always a hit.

Good to know! Usually when I say I like liver, people tend to turn their noses up a bit, but I’m happy to be in good company here 😊
