We used to have a plentiful supply of what my grandfather said were the biggest pheasants he had ever seen.

If we left a door open, we could guarantee that we would find at least one in the house. If you opened the door, they ran TOWARDS you, not away from you.... In fact, on one occasion, we managed to go away on the Friday night and came home late on Sunday night, to find the front door wide open. Our first thoughts were not what everyone else would be thinking - but were instead "oh crap, just how many pheasants will be in the house?"

I cooked a cheese and mushroom omelette for my breakfast, and then cooked nothing else all day long. I needed a break!

You certainly deserved one!

Huevos rancheros, Spanish rice, beans and some of the tomatillo salsa

Rosemary, courgette, yoghurt and rice cake, with tomato sauce, broccoli, various and peas.

The courgettes, rosemary, lemons, basil (and the stray yellow bean!) and tomatoes are all home grown, the yoghurt home made and the eggs from my own chooks.

Last dinner of March 2026. Roast Chicken Legs with Potatoes, Fennel, Tomatoes, Thyme & Garlic. A go to from Theo Randall's "My Simple Italian". It's a minimum effort ; maximum flavour dish!
