What did you cook or eat today? (November 2025)

Cooking was a lot of detours and missteps today. First, with the ribs, I didn’t have the same cut the recipe called for, nor did I have any apple juice for the barbecue sauce, so I had to work around that.

Then, I went to make a potato-ham layered side dish, and I’d didn’t have quite enough potatoes, so I sort of guessed at everything else and miscalculated a little, and I had too little of this and too much of that and a slightly too-large baking dish.

Worse, I ran out of the cheese I’d already shredded and wasn’t about to dig the shredder back out of the dirty sink, so I finished off with some of MrsT’s shredded reduced fat cheese…that 💩 don’t melt! It just sort of hardened into an impenetrable shield, protecting the layers of divine potato slices, ham slices, etc contained within.

What’s more, I gave absolutely no consideration to timing, so when the ribs were ready to go under the broiler/grill for the last few minutes…I still had about 30 minutes to go on the taters! It also blocked my planned snacky-snack of crostini and tapenade. I want my two ovens back!

It all came out fine in the end. Just took longer, but that was ok.

This morning, I blithely declared I was not going to do anything today. My wife laughed at me.
At 8pm, I can assure you I've done very little, and since I was definitely not going to cook, I went and bought a Chinese takeaway. Vegetable fried rice, spring rolls, hot and spicy (in their opinion) noodles with pork and shrimp. That all went down well, and I've got more than enough for lunch tomorrow!
 
This was a case of empty the veg drawer in the fridge.

We had a new delivery of a vegan Doenjang and it is so much better and nicer and just tastier than previous versions we've tried. So much so that not only did i only need the amount the recipe specified (last time round same recipe needed more than double the amount) but my OH went back for seconds.

About the only original true to recipe ingredients in there are the spring onions and the courgettes. But the veg needed eating. Delicious.
