I refuse to use celery seeds. Can't stand the taste anymore. Same with marjoram for which I substitute basil...and don't forget cloves and celery seeds. 1/8th tsp too much and the food is ruined!
Agree with cloves and nutmeg, especially the cloves!

I do the exact oppositeAnother one that occurs to me…when I’m making salad dressings, I always cut the vinegar in half and increase the oil by half, and usually increase whatever sweet thing that’s going in there (honey, sugar, etc) by half, or else it’s too biting for MrsT.

I don't like cloves or nutmeg. Reminds of pumpkin pie, which I don't like.I refuse to use celery seeds. Can't stand the taste anymore. Same with marjoram for which I substitute basil.

I used to really dislike those plus cinnamon.I don't like cloves or nutmeg. Reminds of pumpkin pie, which I don't like.
I like cinnamon fine. I use it in tea with honey. I've never liked cloves and nutmeg. IDK.I used to really dislike those plus cinnamon.
But then I had my MIL's bread sauce (Delias recipe) which contains a tiny amount of clove and her apple pie which she was very sparing with the cinnamon and I liked both.
Nutmeg is still a big no though.
Perhaps someone has a recipe where it works when used very sparingly?
I would like to like it.
Maybe as it is poisonous your body somehow knows to reject it?
Mr SSOAP loves cinnamon.I like cinnamon fine. I use it in tea with honey. I've never liked cloves and nutmeg. IDK.
I despise it. My mother loved them and made them as gifts to mail to relatives every Christmas.Mr SSOAP loves cinnamon.
I made a spice blend to have in hot milk that contains a decent amount of it and I like that.
For me I think it comes down to being given strongly spiced cakes and puddings in childhood.
Fruitcake still makes me shudder![]()
Long ago it was the most popular and requested cup of tea time snack in the hospital. Patients couldn't get enough of the fruitcake.I despise it. My mother loved them and made them as gifts to mail to relatives every Christmas.
I remember one Christmas giving her a funny card about "The fruitcake that traveled around the world", as in no one eats it, they store it upon receipt and send it someone else the following Christmas, and so forth, lol. It hurt her feelings so I felt badly, but it was a funny card.
But it wasn't even real fruit, it was those candied preserved dried fruits with a shelf life of probably 10 years...yuck.I think that it was the WW2 rationing that did it for that gen the sheer joy that you could just buy sugar and eggs and fruit.
Of course the health nazi's latched onto it's carb content and it was gone but that was IMO a huge mistake as patient's quite simply didn't get enough calories in the appalling food they were served which in turn slowed recovery and effected the immune system.
Shame as well because if you had a difficult patient who was making your life a misery slipping them an extra slice of fruitcake could work wonders
I'm not certain because it was many moons ago but I was told that at some point way back in history fruitcake was considered a wealthy persons cake, another reason it was popular at banquets and weddings
Sounds like a great card to me![]()

Century-old Fruitcake
The Fruitcake’s Revenge
But the funniest thing is that out of all of the 100 year old artifacts, it was in the best condition...scary stuff. Forget formaldehyde, just eat fruitcake! (NOT)Lol
She's right you can't escape fruitcake
I think I'll bookmark this post and when I finally succumb to the horrors of dieting when I get hungry I'll just look at that century old fruitcake pic, it's enough to put anyone off their food![]()
Not always. My BIL (RIP) made tzatziki once and thought that. He ended up adding more of everything but garlic. If garlic is good then more garlic is better.
Yeah I remember you mentioning that. I would say to those who love garlic and want to add a LOT, try using semi-roasted garlic instead as it's much more mellow. I think that scampi sauce would have been better if they had cooked the garlic longer before adding the shrimp, it sounds like it was still somewhat raw...I can't abide raw garlic much. Even when I make salsa or guac, I use semi-roasted garlic. Not always. My BIL (RIP) made tzatziki once and thought that. He ended up adding more of everything but garlic.
I had shrimp scampi out once. OMG, it had so much garlic in it that it was nearly inedible, made my mouth burn. It wasn't just me either, had Craig and DD try it.
