What music are you listening to? (2025)

I always talk about how being the youngest of six, much of my musical taste was formed by exposure to the music of my older siblings.

That album was one my second-oldest brother had, and when he joined the US Army and left home (and the country), I pretty much inherited it and played it constantly and on any given day “Give Me Love” is my favorite Harrison song…and some days is my favorite song bar none.

Pink Floyd/Roger Waters - Comfortably Numb

Roger was touring, playing the whole of The Wall as a theatrical performance. He was doing several nights at the O2 Arena in London. I joined his official online fan club to make sure I got early release tickets. A couple of days before the ticket release I got an e-mail from the fan club in Roger's name recommending that everyone got tickets for the Thursday night, no explanation why though. I did it and got excellent seats right near the front. Come the night there was an absolute buzz about the venue, and the secret was out, but none of us dared believe it, something big was definitely happening because of the number of press present and the full film rigs set up.
The gig proceeded as normal until they got to Comfortably Numb where instead of the normal guitarist appearing atop the set Mr David Gilmour started singing. Twenty thousand people, including me lost their shit, grown men were ugly crying. This was the only time since Live8 that the two of them would play together in a proper show, it was beyond words for a Pink Floyd fan.
At the end of the performance the wall was demolished and the band returned to the stage for the final song Outside the Wall. This time not only did David Gilmour join Roger, but so did Nick Mason. All three surviving members of Pink Floyd together again. The audience quite rightly lost their shit once more.
An amazing night, and I get to say I was there.

We're big DMB fans. What's cool is my youngest, who's been listening to DMB since he was in the womb, now plays and sings DMB songs on his guitar. :D

Gary Numan - My Name is Ruin

I liked Gary as a youngster, but never enough to buy any of his records. Eventually after being pushed by his managenent into endless touring he committed career suicide by announcing he was retiring from live performance. Soon after he was dropped by his record label and it all went wrong. He then spent many years trying to rebuild his career without industry support. Obviously I forgot about him and was unaware of a following that grew behind him as his work matured and became heavier.
Then in 2018 I was watching the Old Grey Whistle Test reunion show on the TV when he appeared. My jaw hit my chest and I forgot how to blink as I realised what I was missing out on. Trips to live shows followed and I got the full rib rattling power of his performances, with darker, deeper but still authentic versions of his original songs mixed in with the new stuff.
Seeing documentaries about him also showed what a kind and thoughtful man he is, and a devoted and supportive father to his three daughters Raven, Persia and Echo. Definitely a guy you would want to know.
