Which of these 2 items do you use for mashing your potatoes?

I always just use a regular potato masher. My mom uses a ricer and it makes the potatoes a lot smoother, but I don't mind lumps and I really hate trying to wash all the little bits of potato out of the ricer! If I want a different texture, I just use the masher and then whip the potatoes with my electric mixer after.

I use a masher like the 2nd picture you posted. It is nothing fancy at all and does the trick. After the initial mash with the hand tool, I add butter, milk, sour cream, and herbs and then run my electric mixer through the mix to make the mashed potatoes creamy.

I use a potato masher like the one pictured on the left most of the time because I like a more rusty mash with the little lumps in it. Occasionally, if I want really smooth mashed potatoes, I will use the electric mixer. No matter what is used to make mashed potatoes, I like them. l like to boil my potatoes with garlic in them, then when I mash them, I keep the garlic and they give the potatoes a wonderful taste.
