There's certainly been a huge increase in craft breweries, but you may have also noticed that there seem to be more new brands of liquor coming from local distilleries. It's easy to pick up the labels that we've been familiar with, but have you tried anything special recently that may not be made by companies like Diageo?

Here are some of my favorites from my area, Nashville:

1) Belle Meade Bourbon: the Nelson family actually made this in 1800s, but then was shut down when prohibition came. Just a few years ago, some of the descendants have begun to make this bourbon again using their old recipe. It's so smooth, with a sweeter finish. Great by itself, but it's amazing in a Manhattan.

2) Corsair Gin: it's the first distillery opened in Nashville since the Prohibition. They have plenty of varieties of liquor to choose from, but my personal favorite right now is their gin. It's not overly spiced with the typical gin herbs. Make great gin and tonic especially when mixed with fever tree tonic water.
