Apparently it is a Rufous beak snake.
We released it

I had never heard of it and thought it was a cobra at first glance.
Obviously, it was Sherlock who saw it first

Had to look that up. We've a rule around here that if it's venemous and you can see a house then it's dispatched, otherwise leave it be.

We get bull snakes - they get driven a mile down the road and let out on the other side of the intersection into the wash

Over here, it is illegal to kill any native animal, snakes included. It doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but preference is to release. If it is in the house, then you call a snake catcher in. Luckily we actually have one not that far away (in Australian terms).

Calling a snake catcher is not going to help as we are too far from anyone.

We try to release all.
But sometimes my terrier is quicker than anyone...
