We had a small invasion this morning, in the shape of some goldfinches. The collective noun is a charm, which is appropriate. It's unusual to see these birds on the ground, but it was soon evident that they were collecting nest material. A sign of spring on the way.

You are lucky to seee them so close up. I have them in trees in my garden but they don't come anywhere near the house. They have the most delightful liquid twittering song:

Unfortunately, their bright colours and song is why they were popular as caged birds for so many years. I like to think we live in more enlightened times, but then I read the paper or watch the news...
