Things that you don't know about sugar?

Definitely some things on that list that I didn't know - especially the part about all animals being born with the preference for sweet tastes except cats! Also, that concept of sweet foods making our brain register that the food contained calories necessary for survival interested me too.

Good read !
Have noticed the switch in way the body converts it's fuels on long rides , I will drop down in output then it peaks back up again

In our house, my husband would always remind us to take things moderately and anything that is excessive is not good. With food, it's the same thing. We are meat eaters - pork, chicken, beef - but we eat moderately and our weekly menu has vegetables and fish as well. Sugar is the enemy of the family because diabetes is in our genes. Although we are not afflicted, we just got to be careful with sugar.

If diabetes is in your genes, then chances are that you or someone else in you immediate family may still get it.
Regardless of how extra careful that you and your family may be.

Interesting, I did not know cats did not like sweeet things. We did have a dog that loved ice cream. I must remember to add beets to my smoothies to give them more of a sweet taste without adding sugar.

You are right. Some doctors said that diabetes is hereditary. However, a specialist told us that if you are careful in your health, the diabetes may not manifest. Normally, it only surfaces when your body is subjected to trauma like being sick or being shocked. Nevertheless, we are trying to avoid excessive use not only of sugar but also of salt and fatty foods.

I have heard many times that cats can't taste sweet. I beg to differ. I had a beautiful, evil, ragdoll cat named Puddin' who loved sweets. Once I made a pineapple coconut cake and after I glazed it with a sweet coconut frosting, I left it on the counter and walked away. Puddin' licked all the frosting off the cake. And there was no dairy in the frosting to attract him, he just loved sweets.

Puddin' sounds like he had excellent taste in baked goods, that's for sure! That cake sounds delicious!!

Interesting bit of information. I thought my cat like sweet stuff and of my dogs I always tell people they like sweet food. Usually when I say that I am referring to pretty much everything that comes off my plate. While I am surprised about the cat info, only recently my dogs helped me get rid of some carrot cake. There isn't a baked item they don't want to get in on. Carrot and sugar must have been dog heaven for them even if sad for me knowing my cake had failed.

I would hate to keep harping on this little boy's bad eating habits, but unfortunately, he fits into the category of eating sugary products, especially cookies, candy & drinking soda on a daily basis!
He knows no bounds and will immediately devour sugary products with little or no shame!!

He's such an adorable sweet & cute kid, but his pigging out on sweet things? Gotta go!! He brought a sweet sugary glazed donut to school yesterday! And here's the kicker; His mom does not know how he got it in the first place!!! He just wouldn't eat lunch either because of it, as he probably was too full to eat lunch!! Shame!!

Not only will sugary things add to his obesity, but eating these things will eventually lead to both tooth decay & diabetes when he reaches his teenage years!! :headshake::stop:

As we have said in other threads, there isn't much you can do unless his Mum and Dad are on board. Its very difficult. There's a family next door to me where the (early teens) kids are really obese. Recently, there was a storm which blew over the bins. Their bin cast loads of empty 1 litre Coca Cola bottles across the road, along with delivery pizza cartons and other 'fast food' stuff. :(

That is so true!!
Unless they are on the same page and think like WE do, all that I can do is watch helplessly as this little boy is in total bliss with eating junk food!! That sad! So sad!! :(:headshake: :stop:

The eating is only part of the problem though. Go back 20 years and you'll find a difference in how we actually lived. More TV watched then, computers now. Go back further and you'll see that more manual work was done, fewer vehicles meant more walking. Walking is now considered as an exercise!

Yeah, I used to walk miles as a kid and didn't think anything of it. And I used to bike everywhere when I was a young teenager. No-one 'worked out' or did special training unless they were an athlete.
