food

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Historically, humans secured food through two methods: hunting and gathering and agriculture. Today, the majority of the food energy required by the ever increasing population of the world is supplied by the food industry.
Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies like the International Association for Food Protection, World Resources Institute, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Food Information Council. They address issues such as sustainability, biological diversity, climate change, nutritional economics, population growth, water supply, and access to food.
The right to food is a human right derived from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), recognizing the "right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food", as well as the "fundamental right to be free from hunger".

    Food memories Q&A

I thought it would be fun to make a thread with some specific questions about your food memories. I provide a template and would love to read all your answers! When you were a child, if you got to choose what was for dinner: what would it have been? What did you buy with your pocket money...

Why do we like the food we like?

I follow a lot of channels on Youtube that specialize in explaining why certain movies, songs, stories, video games, etc are so well loved. You could just dismiss that all as "Well its personal opinion", but that's a cop-out. Even accounting for personal taste, there are just some things that...

    Is fish-n-chips a finger food?

I had cajun fish-n-chips today (fried catfish and French fries). I eat fried fish with my hands, but I noticed two other diners eating the same thing with knives and forks. It got me wondering what other people do. I eat chicken fried steak with a knife and fork, but eat classic American fried...

Recipe Chicken and Sweet Potato Dog Food

I ate dog food today, and I don’t mind admitting that I liked it. It was a bit bland, but otherwise it was tasty, and I can't blame my dogs for liking it, too. Over the years, I've tried giving my dogs a variety of dog foods, from the crappy, low-end ones that I realized soon are not good for...

    Show us your lunch

As we already have a ' show me your breakfast ' thread, I was thinking a lunch thread was in order too. I tend to eat a light lunch, something like rice crackers and a snack that replaces my afternoon snack. For example starting with today's lunch: Prawn cocktail crisps, a rice cracker with...

Food Waste Challenge ~ September 2022

DH & I were chatting last night about Food Waste in our home. I don't think that I throw out very much food at all, but I could be wrong. So, with this said, I'm mainly starting this thread for myself, to keep track of what I'm wasting and how much it cost to purchase. Granted, the produce...

    Food Shopping-Kroger Boost.

First, if this is not the appropriate forum I apologize. I didn't see a better place. Kroger has a new service called Kroger Boost. What's Your Favorite Food Pairing?

Some foods work well together, and some foods don't. But, some foods are truly a match made in heaven. I'm thinking of this after ordering a steak sandwich at a restaurant I particularly like. I liked the sandwich, but when I brought half of it home, it occurred to me that I could make it...

    Would you eat this food?

Went to a family memorial service earlier. It was first at the burial ground and then back at the house with food etc. The food was picked up at 8am. People didn't come back until about 11am. Food was sandwiches. Tuna, smoked salmon, egg, cream cheese. There was no fridge space so the food was...

How do you do your weekly food shopping online?

I know this sounds odd but exactly how do you use the system your supermarket provides for online shopping (whether it is delivered or you pick it up from the store)? For instance, I always shop with a particular recipe in mind. So I might need aubergines, courgettes, red & green peppers and...

As I was writing an answer to Mountain Cat about French Fries, it got me thinking. Many foods, or food items we claim as our own... are not our own. We Brits will assure you that Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow, or Birmingham - when it was originally invented in Delhi and called...

    US Shortage of Baby Food?
