Wow. Amazingly hardy. We've had a mild winter this yearand as usual the main consideration is always moisture. Will start indoors, then. Also good for garlic shoots if nothing else

Onions grow well here, but I struggle with garlic..Perhaps you could add onions to this thread title? - would be useful - similarities growing, storage and usage
Your part of the world is rather warm for garlic I'd imagine.Onions grow well here, but I struggle with garlic..
Yep, thats what I think.Your part of the world is rather warm for garlic I'd imagine.
I do that too with the fridge. It goes in there in a paper bag for 2 months prior to planting.I start my garlic in there fridge. It gives then there cold spell it needs to start growing.
Then it's free draining soil (no issues with that), plenty of fertiliser (borderline here) and watering (which is where I fail, my soil doesn't hold on to water at all, it's an Aussie thing: it's hydrophobic literally, it repels water. I've been adding organic matter to my soil, but it still needs more. )
Garlic is one of many veg that need a cold period to trigger growth. It's why you're told not to put it in the fridge to store it. It only needs about 2 weeks to start growing. I then put it over a jar of water to trigger rapid root growth (balanced on toothpicks) before planting them out. It gets them ahead of growth if the trial ones i did one year, by about a month or so.I've been meaning to try this fridge thing, but I tend to eat the batch ....
I'm almost out of fresh garlic, so I may try depending on the price of the next batch.
(I do have garlic cloves in the freezer for emergencies)
Did not know that! And that's how I often store it in the summer when it gets hot.Garlic is one of many veg that need a cold period to trigger growth. It's why you're told not to put it in the fridge to store it. It only needs about 2 weeks to start growing.
