Cheap or Expensive Cutlery?

Something SandwichShortOfAPicnic said made me think of our cutlery sets over the years.

We used to have cheap ones that hung up, bought from a supermarket and added to slowly, as we lost them... it was all very chaotic and uncoordinated. The house we moved to didn't have any drawers and everything had to hang up. At some point, we revamped the kitchen (despite being tenants), and suddenly we had a cutlery drawer. I don't even know why I bought this set, but it was really great to have decent cutlery instead of tired of plastic stuff that was fading and chipping....

I bought a Stellar Robinson cutlery set in matt, which has been discontinued sadly. Stellar Rochester Matt 44 Piece Cutlery Gift Box Set

My parents loved ours so much that they also bought a set and because we don't use soup spoons and they don't use dessert spoons, we traded. We also bought extra teaspoons because we use so many....

This is their shop and Rochester range now. Not expensive by any means, but do much nicer to hold than the supermarket cutlery we used to have.

So, do you have cheap or expensive cutlery? Let's see it. (I'll post mine in daylight tomorrow if others participate ;) )
I have all Japanese cutlery, the best in the world. I don't own a set. Each knife is selected by me individually. Most of them have carbon steel blades. Yes they turn black over the years. They cut like razors and hold an edge much longer than stainless steel, even the exotic alloys. Expensive, though. A good chef knife is around $200 US and up. The one you see in my avatar is not carbon steel. It was made from tool steel by hand in the cutlery center of Osaka. Tool steel is used to cut other steels. It is an amazing implement. Nothing better than a thin hard blade or a thin abrasion resistant blade.

I do remember however my mother had real British Silver Wear that only came out for formal occassions - something she had each month - yeah, she was a snob sorry to say. Why do I remember that - because I was the "little black duck" that had to sit at the kitchen table and polish the bloody stuff!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

I get the impression it was more likely your poor ol’ Ma had to find a way to keep you out of trouble
Did you perchance have to polish everyday?
