I just bought mine outright (no rental). I use it mainly as a camera but have a £12 a month internet package which is fine for texting, emails, phone calls.

We do not rent mobile / cell phones.
We pay in monthly installments for them.
Our´s are paid off ..
However, here when you buy a new cell or mobile, the benefits are that by paying monthly, you do not need to delve out a ton of cash for an I - Phone or whatever Brand one selects, but the customer service contract is excellent and provides insurance in case, the mobile is in an accident or stolen .. It also provides discount if the screen is cracked too ..

Its the same here and that is what most people do - by rental, that is what I meant. I should have been clearer. I just prefer to buy outright and have a cheaper monthly tariff.
