Required Equipment

Frying pan with lid. Cast iron if possible.

The Recipe
You don’t need to follow this exactly.
1lb Mince (Quorn mince works too)
1 onion
3 potatoes, chopped about 1inch square
1 can green beans
1 can baked beans
1 can kidney beans
1 can tomato soup
1 can sweet corn
1 can of chopped tomatoes
1 tps chilli powder
1 bay leaf (if you must)
Salt and pepper

The Method
Preheat the frying pan, not too hot at this stage.
Add some oil to the pan.
Brown the mince and onions.
Stir.
Add the fresh potatoes.
Stir.
Open the cans and tip all the contents in.
Stir.
Add spices (as much as you want).
Stir.
Easy!

This is definitely a can do meal! Slightly worried that there are no instructions on how long to cook the fresh (raw) potatoes once all the cans have been added. It would need at least 15 to 20 mins cooking. Looks to be a scouting recipe?

Scout Association(UK) had over 2,000 versions of "Cowboy Stew" in the mid 90's.
Every group, and every patrol(in some cases) within the group had their own version.

I've tried at least ten different versions locally.

Is this the best one you tried?

BTW, I've now received that (gourmet?) Scout recipe book I ordered, so will report back tomorrow on any developments.

One version my group did of this, from memory, included the following:
Minced meat 20lb
Spuds 15lb
Carrots 5lb
Parsnips 5lb
Small sausages 4-5lb, made by the butcher(also supplied the minced meat)
Tin of beans(catering)

You've then got the salt, pepper and other smaller items. Not forgetting the water

Cooked in a homemade "pan" that used to be a large beer barrel. Gas burner made to fit the pan, by me as was the "pan". Detachable for transporting and should the pan be used on a camp fire. Short legs(detachable) fed through the handles on either end, kept in place by the weight, provided the stability on the ground.

It's the only one to hand at present.

One made by a chef who was a leader with the "Lancashire Loonies", would be the best one. He cheated though, half cooking it at work! And he'd not share that part with anyone, it just got put in the pot on camp.

"Giddy-up" I say. It sure looks like a "can do" recipe and I might actually half cook those potatoes before hand.

You answered my question. I was wondering it you tried this out and by the way, where is my photo?
