Game and other wild animals

Water buffalo's are those working buffs
You won't get a cape buffalo doing the same.
Almost similar the the elephants. The Asian elephantis quite often used to work, but don't try the same with our African elephant :)
Thanks for the info, I didn’t know they are so different. I never heard of elephant meat either.

The locals will est elephant, but it is not a common meat.
I put the comparison out as behavioural, not meat wise.
I have had buffalo, crocodile, hippo, warthog, bush pig and most "deer" species, but I do not think I have had elephant
Neither would I go looking for it....

I think it’s not energy efficient to cook tough meat. Until I discovered a crockpot by accident(office Christmas party gift exchange) I stay away from cooking meat that’s not efficient use of my time and my gas stove. It turns out more expensive overall.

It’s very difficult to kill and elephant I can’t think for a minute there’s a humane way to do it.
I’ve always thought that if you eat meat then you shouldn’t be fussy because no animal would ever volunteer to die for your plate but now I sit here reading that I realise I couldn’t eat elephant.
They’re too intelligent, they have self awareness and display empathy. I find those hurdles a bit much.

OK I think that's another discussion alltogether.
I love elephants. They are great animals and very intelligent.
They can also be destructive.
They are killed by poachers for their ivory and not because of their meat.

I happen to live in the small part of the world where the elephants are thriving.
Now an elephant eats up to 90 kg of greens every day and drinks 120 litres of water
And there is no unlimited land anymore.
So there's a problem. The elephants destroy the habitat of other animals.
Note that this is not the case in most countries, but something Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana struggle with.

Yer I watched a prog on it 😞
And yes it is a different topic.

So badjak has obviously eaten a lot of different, let's call them "non-traditional" meats. Non-traditional, in the Western sense, perhaps; Venezuelans eat tortoise and capybara, Koreans eat dogs and Peruvians/Ecuadorians eat guinea pig. In Belgium and parts of France, horsemeat is common.
How about the rest of us? What's the most unusual meat you've ever eaten?

When I was in the Bay area I bought some rabbit meat from an American supermarket. When I was in Canada I ordered frog legs.
Rabbit meat from hunting and frog legs at the market. I've some deer in the freezer but probably squirrel as the most unusual. They're small, not much meat, and they know to go to the other side of the tree when they see you.

Takes two to hunt them efficiently.

I bought venison here before, but that same shop doesn’t sell it anymore. I used to ordered quails and goose from them for Christmas.

Rabbit is available in Venezuela; in fact, there are some restaurants which specialise in that.
It's commonly available in Spain - or at least in the Granada/Andalusia area family lives in. You can buy it in supermarkets.

Horse meat is commonly eaten in some places, though not in others - I've eaten that.

Yesh, I've eaten frog legs and rabbit and like both, but not much meat on frog legs, so I may as well eat chicken
Had kangaroo steak, ostrich and horse meat.
Not fond of the latter, unless it is the real tender bit (steak). The other cuts I find sweet and overpowering.
I will try most things (once), as long as it is not a protected animal or poached (illegally caught in snares, not the cooking method. Wondering why they are called the same)

Didn't realise that had posted - was going to add a couple of things I've eaten by way of seeing what it was like - an accidentally killed snake and a squirrel someone trapped. I wouldn't go out of my way tho.

Ostrich is fairly commonly available in some places and farmed. Very good, actually. As is wild boar. And have had various deer, antelope etc.
In this area porcupine are hunted on occasion, in particular to cook and feed to people who are poorly.
