Thought I would start a thread with a subject that always fascinated me...
Other people's kitchen cupboards, but specifically their herbs & spices. I love looking through other people's herbs and spices and finding new one.

So rather emabrrasingly/dauntingly, this is my herb & spice cupboard... they didn't all fit onto 1 shelf, so spices are at the bottom in layers, herbs take the top left (and there are a few more in the 'garden' and in the freezer...) and does not include the fresh chillies, garlic, or ginger which live on a window sill.

After coming back from our tour, the rule was we would only purchase something if it was needed that week for a meal... I think there is only 1 item in there that has yet to be used (mace, before you ask). I actually have no idea how many individual spices I have and some need restocking next weekend when I visit my mother again - almost our closest health food shop (21 miles away!)

The other day, I picked up a recycling box, where someone had clearly just cleared out a kitchen cupboard, and dumped a dozen or so emptied, but not washed, spice jars. The mingled aroma was amazing, took me right back to our spice rack when I was a kid.

Now, I have to say, I don't have a lot of variety. A jar of mixed herbs, one of cinnamon, black pepper. Also, soy sauce, sesame oil and white wine and balsamic vinegar.

Ahh - that does not include the shelf of oils, vinegars and soy sauce.

But you have reminded me that I need to look out for some more spice jars. too many of my spices are sitting in plastic packaging that is starting to split! Thank you!

Yes, see my reply to that! :)

I had a clear out at home lately I discarded some stuff I have had for a few years, the problems is I get given loads of Samples and use a bit and then put it in store , I have got a load of specialist Aussie spices around and Chinese super market stuff , Indian bases and a bit of Creole, including some pacific ring stuff, but can never find what I need at the time!!!!

I have a lot of spices and flavourings (packed away at the moment) but I have easily filled two cupboards stacked full with them.

After some help from Arch & NT, my spice cupboard now looks a little more friendly and less chaotic... I've been trying to ditch the Schwatz jars because I can't get my measuring spoon into them - or even a normal teaspoon for that matter.

Yay, looks good!

I can always concentrate on the Barts jars and look out for them - we get fewer of them, but they trickle in....

That would be fantastic please - still have 15 of them in use between the herbs (12) and the spices (3).
Also if those coffee jars are not wanted by others they are great, especially if they come in larger sizes. The dals, beans and peas need sorting out (they have just thrown themselves out of the cupboard again (lentil layer pie for evening meal)) - way too many open packets of various things which need sealing in ait tight containers if they are going to last a damp kitchen! thank you.

OK, I'll concentrate on those things and let you know when I have a bagful or two.

BTW, your donation was much appreciated by my work, thank you. :)

I've got a spice tin thing (can't remember its fancy name), a spice rack and various small tubs etc in a cupboard. Will do pics later. I mostly cook Indian food so it's almost all herbs and spices used for curries etc I have. I've started getting mine from a supplier thru ebay as it works out much, much cheaper than buying the Schwartz jars.

Satnav, are you anywhere near Poundland or one of those sorts of shops? Only I was in one just before Christmas, and they had sets of new jars which could be used for spices and chutneys. It was between 3 and 6 jars for £1, which seemed pretty good to me. They may also have sets of clear plastic containers that would be suitable for pulses.
