Homesick

I’ve planned a week in April for about 10 days… today however I felt a tremendous nostalgia
I know how that feels. I live in Ohio which is about a 15-hour drive from my home in Florida, and I miss it often. I have only been home once in the past 6 years. We are coming off a bitter winter up here so I would love to be somewhere warm.

I am glad you get to go home in April, the weather will be beautiful for you then, and 10 days is a nice stretch of time!

Oh I see.
So you can feel how I feel in this moment. Only been home once in the past 6 years must be challenging for you. I am sorry 🥺
I also understand that the distance for you to cover is quite different than the distance I have here from Ireland to Italy.

Thank you. I still have many friends who live in my hometown of Destin, Florida (NW Florida) and my family is scattered all over the state, so when I do go, I don't have time to visit everyone. Yes, it is a very long drive and next time I might fly, but then I will probably have to rent a car since some of my family live a few hours away from each other and they don't live in or even close to Destin. My DH has family that do live near Destin, and it's on the beach (also where my friends live), so that's where we would fly in and start the trip--10 days wouldn't be long enough, though!

I suppose it is difficult for some of us in Europe thinking about the wide distances you have to cover from a city to another in the US.

Yes, and we don't have as great of transit services as you do in Europe. Our trains are mostly cargo/freight trains. There are some for transportation but they don't go everywhere, only certain cities. And bigger cities have good inner city transit systems but in smaller cities/towns/rural areas if you don't have a car it's a hardship.

Count your blessings that it's a short trip for you to go home!

DH and I both want to go to Italy since he is of Italian descent and has a lot of relatives over there he has never met, but he keeps saying if we go we might not ever come back

😅 who knows…

I had no idea your husband had italian descent! Does he know Italian language?
I probably know more Italian than he does! No, his great-grandparents came over (from Felitto in Salerno) around 1900. He has an aunt who has been over there to visit the family a few times and she speaks some Italian. Most 2nd and 3rd generation (and beyond) Italian Americans don't speak Italian, unfortunately. It's a shame to let the ancestral tongue fade away, I think.

I would love Italy, I know it. I love Italian food (and wine), even though I realize a lot of the Italian American dishes I eat here in the US are vastly different than the real deal in the mother country.

I can relate. Ireland is to Italy what Venezuela is to England. And you're probably like me, 43 years ago. Move to a new country, no friends, no customs, completely different culture.
But the distance between Venezuela and England compared to Italy and Ireland is so far off! How long does it take you to get to England (if you had a straight flight) including the time to and from the airport? I am sure that MypinchofItaly can get back to Italy much faster.

It's also difficult for a person from a country that uses the metric system and a person who uses the American standard of miles to relate distances (unless they are very familiar to both), which is why I often post it in travel time instead of miles when discussing how far away something/someone is in the US to make it easier.

I have a sister who lives in Seattle, Washington which is very far NW on the Pacific Ocean. If I were to drive to visit her, it would take about 37 hours in a car not including stops for food, fuel, sleep, etc. By plane it would be just over 5 hours (not including driving to and from the airport).

Another sister lives in Austin, Texas, and it would take me about 20 hours driving straight through with no stops and just over 6 hours by plane including a layover because there are no non-stop flights available at this time.

Just the state of Florida is amazingly vast. I drove once to Key West when I lived in Destin and it took me about 14 hours to get there. It takes a little more than 5 hours to drive across the northern part of the state from the Alabama state line to Jacksonville on the Atlantic Ocean side.

This makes me curious how long it takes to get across some of the EU and SA countries. karadekoolaid, how long does it take to get across Venezuela? Is there decent transit there? How is the infrastructure, do you have good roads? How about other forum members countries, how quick can you get from one side of your country to another, and what means do you choose to travel?
