ISO Help With Importing Photos

Help!
My husband was at my laptop the other day and did something, I can't figure out what or how.
When I plug my iPhone SE into the USB port of my laptop, it use to automatically open a screen and I could import my photos.
NOW, it does it.
I did a WWW search and it said to turn off the OneDrive, which I did... it still doesn't automatically open up to import.
Oh, I have Windows something, don't remember which one, on my HP laptop.
HELP ME!

You're looking for the default settings... so I would open the control panel (or settings or similar) and search on the word default or autoplay. Find the USB option and reset it to either ask or open...

It is possible that you were importing from memory card or phone as well which will prompt you. If you reset to prompt what to do each time, you can work out which setting you're after and choose one you've sussed it out. Do nothing is to be avoided in this instance.

I pocked around some and I found what I was looking for in the laptop's I suppose they're called apps?
There's a "Photos" icon in the left hand sidebar, when I opened that voila!
That's what I'm trying to get back.
Whenever I'd plug in my iPhone, that opened straight off and then you could "import" the photos you chose to a file folder and edit the photos.
I guess because that's how I was originally taught to download my photos by my youngest niece, that's what I'm use to using.
But with that I said, I understand now another way of importing my photos to my laptop.
I read that article that you linked above, thank you again, and then also found a You Tube video that went into greater depth.
So I guess now, I'm looking for a way to have that "Photos App" to be the default I think is how you say it?

Trying clicking on the settings button. I can't screenshot for you because my laptop is being rebuilt (my me) to try to resolve a problem that's affecting my university studies. In between trimesters was the only sensible time to do it.

The settings icon is to the immediate right of the import button (top right). You will likely find an option in there that will allow to import photos when you connect your phone or USB device. It coughs even be recognising it as a camera, so you'll need to look for all 3.

The option will also be in the system default actions in the control panel. There is always more than one way of finding things with Microsoft.

So, click start. Then settings (2nd option up from start). Then click devices (middle of first row on mine). Down the left side, there is something called autoplay, second from last, click that.

It's the second option down that needs to be changed.

I appreciate that it says memory card, but that is how it sees Phones etc.

Try that and let me know.
 
stuff that does "auto" makes me cringe.

when I connect my iPhone via USB cable, I see:

and using Win11/File Explorer, with a couple clicks I see all the iPhone foto folders - arrgggh arranged by month . . .

anyway, I can click into "Apple iPhone" - sometimes must click on "Yes" to "Trust this computer"
and copy any of the photos to the computer hard drive.

with the marvels of Windows - there's buckets of ways to "do the same thing" - use what works for you!
