The adhesive properties of jam are much better than cream making it a much better candidate as the joining layer in the middle whilst also allowing huge amounts of cream to be piled on top

I will try it next time. This was very little cream though

This is one of those fascinating food controversies I just love to read about.

I was taught the manner I described by my Yorkshire ex - inlaws. They were decidedly NOT posh
( they already considered me posh for eating yoghurt from a bowl and not the container )

Folks from Yorkshire are definitely down to earth, and I just love them for that!
Way back in the 70s, I played an annual game of cricket with a pub team from Sussex. It was a wonderful day out, in a beautiful Sussex village, and we'd bring all the family for the game.
One particular year, there was a Yorkshire man and his son playing ( and a Scottish international player).
Dad was umpiring, son was bowling. Hit the pads - an appeal for leg before.
" Howzat, dad? "
"Out, son!"
Then when we got into the pub afterwards (many pubs had a public bar, and a private bar - a bit more luxury and 2pence more for a pint).
Couldn't see the opposite team . We were all in the private bar, where the ladies could sit in a bit more comfort. A Yorkshire man poked his head round the door separating the 2 bars and said:
"We drink in't'public bar ! "
